FI+Z F/X

The F/X unit operates in combination with the MDR2 Motor Driver to provide a powerful set of control and in-camera effect capabilities. Its simple user interface and large display make operation quick and intuitive. The unit's Lens Library provides for the storage of 150 lens types, virtually eliminating the requirement to calibrate lenses on the set.

The F/X unit provides the following functions:

• Camera speed ramping using Speed/Aperture , Speed/Shutter, or Speed/Shutter/Aperture for exposure compensation.
• Shutter/Aperture interlock for depth of field control.
• Record and Playback of FIZ channels for repeating sequences
• Delivery of Absolute motor positions (for CGI applications).

The F/X unit was specifically designed for quick set-up and ease of use. All calculations for f-stop, shutter angle and camera time to screen time conversion are done by the unit. Up to 150 lens calibrations may be stored in memory during prep, enabling lens changes in moments.

Camera speeds can be ramped either automatically or manually. In the automatic mode, up to four speeds and three ramp times can be entered. Speed changes are cued by pressing the Up/Down Cursor keys. The F/X unit automatically calculates the ramp time as a screen (projected) time. In the manual mode, the user enters the minimum and maximum speeds and uses the slider on the side of the unit to control camera speed.

The calibrated Iris Knob sets the base (24fps) f-stop; the user is free to make a stop pull at any time - even during a speed ramp.

This same ease of use is carried over into the Speed/Shutter mode. Once the user enters the desired speeds, the unit calculates and displays the correct shutter angle relative to the 24 fps reference set by the user. As in the Speed/Aperture mode, speed ramps can be made either automatically or manually.

The Record/Playback function allows up to 10 minutes of lens, camera speed, and shutter angle data to be both captured and played back. The Playback function may be triggered manually from the keyboard or remotely through the serial connection. This allows the playback of camera and lens functions to be synchronized with other motion control equipment such as remote heads, cranes and dollies.

The F/X has an integral microwave spread spectrum transceiver, which operates in the 2.4GHz unlicensed ISM band. Channel selection is indicated in the System Status screen and may be changed through the keyboard to match that of the MDR2. Thirty channels allow multiple users to operate simultaneously without interference. The flat microwave antenna is integrated into the top of the housing for ruggedness.
